2025 farming season launched in the North West region

The 2025 farming season has been launched in the North West region.
North West Governor Adolph Lele Lafrique who doubles as board chair of the North West Development Authority, MIDENO launched the season with a symbolic planting on March 12 at premises of MIDENO, where improved farm seeds and agricultural tools were distributed to a cross section of farmers from all the divisions in the North West.
Christened "The season of Hope and resilience", the General Manager of the parastatal Cletus Anye Matoya, speaking at the event, indicated that the donated farm tools, materials and seedlings of a variety of cash crops to farmers is part of a large consignment, mobilized by the Authority since 2024 within the framework of the Food Security Enhancement Project - PULCCA.
He told the farmers present that the launching which comes with the distribution of the farm inputs, should serve as a reminder that agriculture remains the backbone of the economy, " serving as a source of livelihood for every home and a key driver of food security in our region".
Key Interventions for this 2025
Together with the government and development partners, MIDENO is targeting to support over 6500 with the following;
✓ Provision of high quality seeds and fertilizers with emphasis on organic fertilizers to improve yields
✓ Supply of essential farm tools and agro chemicals to ensure productivity
✓ Support for sustainable and climate smart agriculture through promotion on the use of organic farm inputs and relevant capacity building.
To ensure transparency in the process, he said the distribution will. e done systematically and equitably to make sure that the beneficiary farmers receive and enhance their farming activities.
He saluted the farmers, who in recent years have been resilient, dedicated and innovative to tackle the challenges encountered in recent years, including limited access to farm inputs, climate change, soil degradation, post harvest losses and other socio economic difficulties.
MIDENO, he added, have been and remains committed in supporting the farmers with these inputs and will continue to push forward for more, urging them to make best use of them, commit to sustainable farming practices and adopt modern farming techniques.
North West governor, Adolph Lele Lafrique said, with the coming of the Emergency project to combat food crisis, launched in the region last season by the minister of agriculture and rural development himself, which has led to an increase in the support to farmers " We are expecting the farmers to increase their production and flood the markets with their produce so we can fight again food insecurity in our crisis zone"
He encouraged them to work with their traditional leaders and contribute in the peace building process, once they get back to their various sub divisions
Brief Background of PULCCA project
Worthy to note is that the PULCCA project is funded by the world bank to the tune of 4.9billion francs, and aims at empowering over 10,700 vulnerable farmers, build the capacities of over 8000 beneficiaries on climate smart agric technics required to strengthen their resilience on climate change.
Under the program, farmers have benefited from improved cassava, potato, maize, plantain, vegetables crop seeds to name but these.
The project has MIDENO as a key stakeholder in the implementation in the North West region.
