North West: Regional and Local Council authorities trained in project development

Experts from the Ministry of the Economy, Planning and Regional Development (Minepat), have schooled regional and local development officers of councils in the North West on how to prepare the development projects for their council areas to meet the demands of their local population.
The one day capacity building workshop took place Tuesday February 18 in Bamenda and according one of the experts madam orock Joan, it was imperative for the regional an council authorities to be able to be able to master the procedure in identifying and formulating projects for their various council areas.
Speaking at the workshop, the head of mission who is the director of the public investment pooling unit at the ministry, Moutine Valerie Bell said, the main objective of the training is to strengthen the process of preparing development projects at the local level.
She said it is expected that the training will assist the regional and local council authorities in producing good and well planned projects that could bring about meaningful developments in the various communities.
The mezam divisional delegate of the economy, planning and regional development, Mawo Evelyn told MNews at the meeting that the workshop was necessitated by the fact that "we had some shortcomings with regards to project maturation at the local level. Most council do not master the competences that have been transferred to them, reason why this training is coming to reinforce and to build up their capacity with regards to the competences that have been transferred to them".
She also indicated that, a good number of councils in the region are functioning without a project bank. Another reason why the workshop has been organized to train the local actors to be able to create project banks in their respective councils and how to manage them.
The representative of North West governor Adolph Lele Lafrique at the event lauded the training, acknowledging that such initiative falls within governments action to speed up the decentralization process.
He said while it is now the responsibility for the regional and local council authorities to develope their development plans, it's incumbent on them that it aligns with the national development strategic paper NSD30 and also responds to the demands of the people at the local level.
The trainees at the end of the workshop were reminded that with the knowledge gained they must be able to initiate projects that are fully in line with the sectoral and strategic objectives as well as set up development banks for the effective management of their development initiatives.
