"We Thought People Won't Forgive The Attrocities We Committed" - Ex Amba Fighter.
We met Emmanuel Arrey, introduced to us as an ex amba combatant and a senior prefect of the ex fighters who surrendered their weapons at the disarmament, demobilisation and reintegration unit located in Bamenda, capital city of the north west region in Cameroon.
On November 10th 2020, during a humanitarian outing by the Bamenda II Council to donate food and Sanitary materials to the ex combatants, this reporter had the opportunity to interview him.
It was during the interview to ascertain how he ( Emmanuel Arrey as senior prefect to the ex fighters in the center) feels following the donations made by the council that he revealed, some of them never knew that the society will be willing to forgive them, following the attrocities (to use his words) they committed while still in the bushes.
In his words" ...Initially here in DDR, we were of the impression that the people out there don't like us. We knew they hate us because of the attrocities that we have committed in the bushes. But with this type of visit today at DDR, we now have hope that the population is ready to forgive us. We use to ask ourselves the question - how are we going to deal with the population out there with all the attrocities we have committed?,
will they forgive us even with the amnesty the head of state has granted to us through the DDR?
So we are really happy for this visit because it has come to encourage and remind us that the people are willing to forgive and embrace us again. This will help us to encourage others to come out from the bushes. We'll tell them the people are with us and that they don't hate us and are not angry with us.
If the Mayor of Bamenda II is here with us then the people of the municipality are with us"
