Humanitarian: Bamenda II Council Donates Food, Sanitary Kits to Ex-fighters.

The Bamenda II Council under mayor Chenwi Peter has donated food items and Sanitary materials to ex fighters at the North West disarmament, demobilization and reintegration centre - DDR.

The items, comprising of plantain, garri, vegetable oil, rice, beans, salt, groundnut, toiletries etc plus a lump sum of fcfa200,000 were tuesday nov.10th handed to the visibly satisfied ex combatants during a brief ceremony at the centre.

Handing over the materials mayor chenwie said in purchasing the commodities the council took into consideration their number, needs and gender.

He told the repentant armed men that surrendering their arms, embracing peace and love for country was the best decision they ever took in the context of the ongoing conflict.

While promising more in terms of dresses, sporting competitions to the DDR occupants to further strengthen what he termed "the marriage ceremony between the council and the centre'', he also announced that jobs will be waiting for some of them at the council when the centre liberates them during it's 2nd phase of the reinsertion program.

"It is the duty of the councils and elites to stand behind these children who've surrendered so as to encourage the others to come out. It's high time to support them with jobs and scholarships like our council is doing"

He enjoined them to be law abiding, respect state institutions and emblems as well as encourage others to surrender their weapons as he shares peace plants and mini sizes of the Cameroon flag.

In his remark earlier, the director of the center Gabsa Sixtus hailed the mayor and his team for being the very first council to have stop at the disarmament centre with donations.

He used the occasion to launch an appeal for all to be ambassadors of the efforts to get the armed fighters from the bushes.

"Peace is a process and the disarmament centre is part of the peace building process" he added.

Recounting the successes of north west DDR he said so far;

-32 ex fighters have been reintegrated into society and now serving in para-statals within the country.

- Security is provided via the BIR to those at the centre.
- Basic education is offered to those in need.

- 3 square meal a day and medical attention is equally offered.

- Skills in embroidery, agriculture and pasture are embedded to the ex fighters who are assisted financially to engage a business venture at the end of their disarmament program.

He also noted that since the centre went operational, they've been able to finance and carry out two major surgical operations and deliver 2 babies.

"These children come to the DDR by their own convictions. We don't force them to come here"


In appreciation, Emmanuel Arrey, senior prefect of the former fighters said:

"By the mayors visit, it's evident the population has started forgiving us despite the attrocities we committed in the past".

The, Divisional officer for Bamenda II Nkongho Nicholas, challenged those running the centre to instill discipline in the ex fighters as some were still into marijuana and drug consumption.

"For this centre to succeed the ex fighters must be able to follow pedagogy and refrain from drug addiction".

He also cautioned, for the population to stop stigmatising the fighters.

The disarmament, demobilisation and reintegration centre was created Nov. 30th 2018, by government in the wake of the anglophone crisis.
