Administration of oral polio vaccine

A mass vaccination campaign of children age 0-5yrs against the contagious polio disease starts today Friday 29th in the North West region and beyond
The campaign to run up to march Sunday 31st 2019, will be carried out by health experts who shall move from door to door, to administer the oral polio vaccine intended to build up the immune system of these children shall be done for free, thanks to the world health organization (WHO) and UNICEF who are sponsoring the treatment, working with health experts in the country. The vaccination exercise is also taking place in all the functional health districts/ hospitals in the region.
Polio is a contagious disease caused by a virus that attacks the limbs of people and most especially children. It leaves its victim paralyzed for his/her life and vaccination seems to be the only way to prevent this life threatening disease.
The health experts apart from moving from one door to the other to administer this vaccine, shall also visit the markets, churches and other places of worship, parks and other public places to administer the vaccine as well.

                         Health worker and immunized population

Since the outbreak of the disease in Nigeria which share a closer boundary with Cameroon few years back, the WHO and UNICEF, working with the Cameroon  government, have embarked on a series of responsive and preventive vaccination campaign to stop the disease from spreading into the country and other neighboring countries within the lake Chad Basin. The vaccination from the 29th to the 31st will prevent this which makes it very important for parents to ensure that their children (those within the targeted age) don't miss out on the vaccination, which as earlier mention would be offered to them for free.
To avoid poliomyelitis we must apart from the vaccination,
- Boil non portable water b4 drinking,
- wash our hands with clean running water and soap b4 & after meals and after visiting the toilet,
- wash our fruits and foods b4 eating, avoid bathing in dirty water or streams and above all avoid defecating in open air latrines or toilets.

The health experts will equally take advantage of the polio mass vaccination campaign to offer Vitamin A to children age 6-59 months, and worm medicine to children age 12-59months as well.
There's no cure for polio and vaccination remains to best way to guard against the contagious disease.
